How Eggs Can Cause Acne

Eggs are an almost universally consumed food product. Unfortunately, they are also a major factor behind many cases of acne. Learn about why and how eggs can contribute to acne as well as what type of eggs to purchase if you simply cannot give them up.

1.Factory-Farmed Eggs are Packed W/Toxins

Factory-Farmed eggs come packed with a variety of toxins each of which can wreak havoc on the internal balance of the body.

Hormones

Hormones pumped into chickens can disrupt our own natural hormone production leading to imbalances in our own hormone production (think excessive testosterone or estrogen production). This can lead to the overproduction of bodily oils and eventually acne.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics can kill the good gut bacteria in our digestive tract and lead to the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. With the good bacteria struggling to survive, bad bacteria can flourish and present itself as a breakout or chronic acne.

Pesticides

Among other things, pesticides can cause skin irritation, burning, rashes, and inflammation, all of which are factors that can contribute to acne. 

Soy

Chickens fed soy produce eggs that are excessively high in estrogen. When those eggs are consumed our own estrogen to progesterone hormone ratios become imbalanced, again, resulting in a breakout or consistent acne problems.

2. Over-Cooked Eggs = Free Radicals & Inflammation

Overcooking eggs (scrambled eggs and cooked yolks) causes damage to the heat-sensitive nutrients within them. As these nutrients are broken down, they create excessive amounts of free radicals that tax our system and can create systemic inflammation.

What Can You Do?

  • While it may be a hard pill to swallow, if acne is something you or a loved one is dealing with, consider taking a month-long break from eggs as a personal experiment.
  • Take note of the improvements to your skin.
  • If you simply cannot go without eggs, buy eggs that are from local, farm-raised, pastured and organic hens.
  • Again, if you can’t give up eggs entirely, but you notice they are having a big impact on your skin, consider reducing your egg intake to only 1-3 times per week.
